چکیده

Effective location tracking strategy is essential to improve the utility of radio channels [1]-[6]. Due to the limited battery life and computational capacity in a mobile station (MS), one desirable feature of a location update scheme is its easy implementation in the MS. A movement-based location update scheme [4] is one of the easily implementable approaches. According to this scheme, each MS maintains a counter, whose value is compared to a movement threshold to trigger a location update. The MS performs a location update when the number of cells visited by the MS exceeds movement threshold T. In this scheme, however, the MS increases its counter value even when the MS reenters a cell previously visited, which triggers an unnecessary location update. To overcome this deficiency, an improved movement-based location update scheme [5] and a location-based location update (LU) scheme [6] were proposed. Among them, we consider the LU scheme, which is evaluated to be superior to the improved

Design and evaluation of two scalable protocols for location management of mobile nodes in location based routing protocols in mobile Ad Hoc Networks

Heretofore several position-based routing protocols have been developed for mobile ad hoc networks. Many of these protocols assume that a location service is available which provides location information on the nodes in the network. Our solutions decrease location update without loss of query success rate or throughput and even increase those.Simulation results show that our methods are effectiv...

A triple layer location management strategy for wireless cellular networks

Location areas is a popular location management scheme in cellular networks. In the location areas scheme, a mobile terminal updates its location whenever it moves into a cell that belongs to a new location area. However, no matter how the location areas are designed, the ping-pong location update effect exists when a mobile terminal moves back and forth between two location areas. The paper de...

A Speed-Adaptive Location Management Scheme

Location management is one of the fundamental issues in cellular networks. It includes two operations: location update and paging. The goal of location management is to minimize the combined cost of these two operations. Recently a distance-based scheme using a pre-defined look-up table for location updates has been proposed. The table describes the relationship between the distance and the tim...

Performance Analysis and Optimization of an Improved Dynamic Movement-Based Location Update Scheme in Mobile Cellular Networks

In this study, we propose an improved version of the dynamic movement-based location update scheme that stores all cells visited by the MS, and their neighboring cells, to reduce the location update cost of the dynamic movement-based location update scheme. We show that a significant reduction in the location update cost is achieved in our scheme. We also show that our scheme has optimal total ...
